Brumby under fire: Vic Enviro groups accuse Brumby of sabotaging critical investigation to save Murray River’s red gum forests, after Premier rejects recommendation to flood the river’s wetlands

Posted by waterweek on 2 October 2007

According to Rachel Kleinman, reported in The Age (28/09/2007, p.4), environmental groups accused Victorian Premier John Brumby of sideswiping a $2 million investigation into saving the Murray River’s red gum forests after Brumby rejected a recommendation to flood the river’s wetlands with billions of litres of water.

Alarmed by Brumby’s behaviour: Environment Defenders Office lawyer Brendan Sydes said Brumby’s remarks were exceptional. Victorian National Parks Association executive director Matt Ruchel said he was alarmed. “He’s given a slap in the face to the thousands of people who have put in submissions,” Ruchel said. “He has undermined the independence and preempted the process.”

Recommendations followed 2-year of investigations: The Victorian Environment Assessment Council, formed by the state government to independently investigate issues of public land use, made draft recommendations to save thousands of dying red gums in the Murray region, including the internationally-recognised Barmah Forest wetlands, after a two-year investigation. They included the creation of four national parks, reduced logging and grazing, and flooding the region with 4000 billion litres of water every five years.

No comments: Council chair Duncan Malcolm declined to comment on Brumby’s remarks. “The council is focused on finishing investigations and public submissions are open until October 8,” he said.
